The MTeach

The Restoratives Practice at Schools lecture by Lyn Doppler (Principal of Rozelle PS) and subsequent presentation by Elaine Smith (part timer and support Rozelle parent and community participant) was a real eye opener for me as to what can be achieved at schools. Up until now, I have been a little sceptical about Dewey and his ideals of the teacher as an artist:
“if education is going to live up to its profession, it must be seen as a work of art which requires the same qualities of personal enthusiasm and imagination as are required by the musician, painter or artist,” (Dewey, c1976-c1983.).
I had envisaged me being more of a guiding learner, taking my students through what they were required to know – al beit with creativity and an engaging twist of course! But this analogy is beginning to resonate with me.
